Why we walk

Bridge of Bras

We walk together to stand with those going through a diagnosis or treatment of breast cancer, to honor those who have fought breast cancer and won and to remember those we lost too soon. One hundred percent of funds raised during Come Walk With Me benefit breast health programs at MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital.

Here are some of the ways your funds help our community:

  • Cooling caps are purchased to help reduce hair loss for patients during chemotherapy.

  • Breast Cancer Treatment Handbooks are issued to all newly-diagnosed breast cancer patients.

  • Post-surgical camisoles with built-in drainage are provided to breast cancer patients at no cost.

  • Complimentary wigs and wig fittings are available for patients in treatment, which include custom color matching, trims and alterations. An average of 27 wigs are given to patients each month. Headscarves and hats are also provided free of charge.

  • Cancer support groups and Lymphedema classes are offered to anyone impacted by cancer to provide education and emotional support.

  • T’ai Chi Chih, Gentle Yoga and Healthy Steps classes are offered to anyone impacted by cancer. The Healthy Steps class is specifically designed for breast cancer patients to prevent or reduce post-surgical Lymphedema.

  • The Pink Fund provides gas and grocery gift cards to under-served breast cancer patients in East Pierce County.

  • A complimentary skin and makeup class called Look Good, Feel Better is offered for women in treatment, which teaches skin care and makeup tips by a licensed beauty professional. The class also includes a cosmetic kit, wig education and social interaction.

  • The Richard C. Ostenson Cancer Resource Center at Good Samaritan Hospital provides cancer-related literature and emotional support for community members impacted by cancer.

How breast cancer patients are being supported through COVID-19

As our clinical teams continue to bravely work to contain the spread of COVID-19, MultiCare has implemented a number of precautions across our facilities to keep patients and staff safe. This includes facilities that benefit from funds raised through Come Walk With Me, like the Good Samaritan Cancer Resource Center.

Since March 2020, wig fitting consultations have been offered to patients virtually, and patients who are in need of food and transportation are being offered gas and grocery gift cards over the phone. To learn more about these services, contact the Cancer Resource Center at 253-697-4899.
