Welcome to Owen's 2nd Annual 5K- Fun Run Benefitting Genetic Testing
Why this cause?
We have learned along our journey that the cost of genetic testing makes it difficult for families to get the diagnosis that their loved one needs.
At our 20-week ultrasound our son showed markers of a possible genetic abnormality. This began six weeks of tests and waiting games. We are some of the lucky ones. Our insurance covered the cost of Owen's tests. After receiving the results that Owen had two chromosomal abnormalities the doctors wanted both Ben and I to be tested as well. To test one family member can cost upwards of $6,000.
Without a diagnosis it is challenging to treat and provide the best care for a patient. Without a diagnosis it is difficult to get the needed approval for services and it is nearly impossible to have those services paid for by insurance. Bottom line: Families should not have to worry about the cost of testing while they are trying to take care of their child.
Mary Bridge Children's Hospital has a special fund for families who do not have coverage for genetic testing and would otherwise not be able to afford the tests. These dollars stay in our community and provide one less stress for families to have during such a scary time.
As our family has connected with other special needs families, we have learned how many of them are struggling to get the tests that are needed. Let’s all pitch in a little to make a big impact!
